The budget cuts implemented by the administration of Donald Trump, the President of the United States, are having a devastating impact on employment within international organizations.

The most striking example is that of UNAIDS. Its headquarters in Geneva will see its workforce reduced from 127 to just 19 employees. According to the ‘Tribune de Genève’, the United Nations is facing job cuts estimated between 20,000 and 30,000. The primary casualty of this situation is the international presence in Geneva, which is being severely impacted by budget cuts from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Other notable examples include Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which plans to eliminate 155 full-time positions at its headquarters in Grand-Saconnex. At the Geneva office of the International Organization for Migration, discussions are underway regarding a reduction of 200 jobs. The International Labour Organization employs 3,654 staff members, including 1,255 at its Geneva headquarters.

The layoffs are also affecting the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the World Health Organization, which could potentially lose 1,000 of its 2,600 employees. According to Career Pivot, over 1,200 individuals have registered for a support session organized by the International Geneva Welcome Centre. It is worth noting that following an initial action plan of 10 million in support of non-governmental organizations, the Cantonal Council established a ‘Foundation for the Adaptation of International Geneva (FAGI)’, endowed with an initial budget of 50 million.
